Job summary

Community Blood Center is seeking a Laboratory Technologist to perform testing, sample preparation, component preparation, quality control, labeling, storage and distribution to support safe and available blood products for local patients. This full-time role requires a Bachelor’s or Associate degree in laboratory science or medical technology, with ASCP eligibility preferred.

You will participate in on-call rotations and contribute to maintaining rigorous quality standards across the blood

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or Medical Technology, from an accredited institution; or an Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology.
• ASCP certification (or eligible) is preferred.
• Meets CLIA requirements for high‑complexity testing; prior lab experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of testing activities (antigen typing, residual WBC testing, high titer screening, pH testing, hematology analyzer operation).
• Ship and handle test samples properly.
• Maintain equipment, monitor temperatures, and perform QC accurately and timely.
• Prepare, store, label, and ship blood components and reagents as needed.
• May assist with donor center collection activities (registration, screening, phlebotomy, aftercare).
• Take after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call rotations as required.
• Assist in training new staff and procedures.
• Keep a neat, clean work area and properly dispose of biohazard waste.

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the performance of a variety of laboratory procedures involved in blood center operations; testing, sample preparation, component preparation, quality control, labeling, storage and distribution. May also be cross trained in blood donor collection activities.

SCHEDULE:

• Full-time position, 40 hours/week
• Typically, hours range between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., weekdays, with on-call coverage for weekends on a rotation basis

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

• May perform all or some of the following testing activities: Antigen typing, residual WBC testing, high titer screening, pH testing, and hematology analyzer operation.
• Responsible for properly shipping and handling test samples.
• Performs required equipment maintenance, temperature monitoring and QC accurately and on a timely basis.
• Prepares, stores, labels and ships blood components and reagent donations as necessary.
• May be responsible for delivery of blood to local customers on a backup or emergency basis.
• Responsible for timely and accurate completion of computer data entry, review of work, and competency and proficiency performance.
• Takes after-hours, weekend and holiday on-call rotations with testing, distribution or other associated responsibilities.
• Performs bacterial inoculation of apheresis platelet products as required by applicable regulations and SOPs.
• May perform donor center collection activities including but not limited to: donor registration, screening, phlebotomy and aftercare.
• Assists as needed, with the training of new laboratory staff or new procedures.
• Maintains a neat, clean work area.
• Appropriately separates and packages biohazard waste.
• Accountable for the economical use of materials and the proper use of equipment while performing duties and responsibilities.
• Complies with all policies and procedures as outlined in the CBC Employee Handbook, CBC SOPs or directives.
• Maintains current level of job-related skills by attending inservices and training sessions and reading publications.
• Attends staff meetings, mandatory CBC inservices, continuing education programs and other meetings as required.

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution,orIndividual must have earned an Associate Degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology program from an accredited institution.
• Preferred individual is ASCP certified (or equivalent) or eligible.
• Meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing, 42 CFR 493.1489.
• Previous laboratory experience preferred.
• Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills.
• Able to follow and perform procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Must be skilled in accurate documentation with emphasis on details.
• High level of assessment skills.
• Must be cordial in dealings with fellow employees, customers and donors, if applicable.
• Requires high degree of acute vision, standing, walking, moderate amounts of lifting, carrying and bending.
• Must maintain a neat clean work area, and present a neat and clean appearance, dressing professionally.
• May be exposed to potentially infectious agents, electrical equipment, and needles.
• Employee may occasionally be required to lift objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
