    This job supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing phlebotomy procedures, injections and processing basic lab tests; ensuring test accuracy through compliance with regulatory requirements, performance and review of quality control and participating in performance improvement activities.     ”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹ Job Duties
    • Utilizes and has full knowledge of the fundamentals of the practice management software.
    • Performs analyses on a variety of biological specimens including blood, urine, stool, throat swabs, nasal swabs.
    • Performs, evaluates, and documents calibration and quality control; resolves issues as needed.
    • Maintains, troubleshoots, and resolves issues with assays and instruments.
    • Demonstrates good laboratory and safety practices, including universal precautions.
    • Adheres to all phlebotomy protocols by selecting and performing the appropriate phlebotomy procedure for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
    • Performs injections in adherence with established protocols.
    • Follows specimen collection, labeling and handling procedures to include verifying patients’ names before collecting specimens.
    • Performs basic lab tests according to accepted procedures. This includes ensuring test requests contain required information and correspond with correct specimens.
    • Documents all lab results in accordance with clinic procedures and distributes reports to appropriate physician staff.
    • Demonstrates competency in use of all lab equipment/machines.
    • Performs quality assurance checks and maintains documentation in accordance with CLIA guidelines.
    • Orders and completes inventory for all laboratory testing supplies accurately and timely.
    • Demonstrates a general understanding of Advanced Beneficiary Notifications (ABN).
    • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      Phlebotomy and injection skills Computer skills General knowledge of phlebotomy supplies and devices used for specimen collection Knowledge of specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture, capillary collection, TB placement, and respiratory swabs, and injections Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS) Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures Knowledge of regulatory requirements: CLIA Skill to use standard laboratory instrumentation
    Professional Experience
      Previous phlebotomy or lab processing experience preferred.
    Education
      Required: High school diploma or GED Required: Graduate of a phlebotomy training program, accredited medical assistant program, or experience in lieu of training will be considered.
    Licensure, Certification, Registration
      Preferred: Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or Registered Phlebotomy Technician (American Medical Technologists)
