Laboratory Technician I
Under the general direction of licensed personnel, the Laboratory Technician I collaborates with team members to perform pre-analytical functions of laboratory testing and other related tasks to maintain the lab section.
Core Competencies
- Accession all specimens received, verifying proper identification and labeling according to departmental procedures and timeframes.
- Label, separate, and prepare specimens.
- Distribute specimens to appropriate work areas promptly.
- Practice sterile and aseptic techniques to prevent cross-contamination.
- Process specimens for the pre-analytical phase of testing, including Molecular Microbiology.
- Grind tissues and prepare for plating.
- Label incoming reagents with received and expiration dates; store appropriately.
- Dispose of samples following department specimen retention policies.
- Record temperatures as per procedure.
- Prioritize and coordinate work to maximize productivity and efficiency.
- Answer telephone calls promptly, route calls, ascertain needs, and take accurate messages.
- Demonstrate active problem-solving attitude and maintain a positive approach to all job aspects.
- Use appropriate handoff communication techniques (SBAR) when necessary.
- Maintain a safe work environment by observing safety procedures and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Participate in hospital performance improvement activities (e.g., kaizens, lean initiatives) as appropriate.
