Position Overview

This position is accountable for performing complex and diverse laboratory tests and records the results on materials used for district, county, local and other state agency transportation projects.

Essential Functions
  • Performs complex materials tests to ensure that samples or materials conform to approved standards and/or determine properties of the samples or materials.
  • Maintains complete and accurate materials test records.
  • Calibrates and maintains testing equipment to ensure information is accurate.
  • Recommends acceptance or rejection of samples and materials tested.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or job related technical/science curriculum PLUS eighteen months of engineering experience; ORFour years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of math to include geometry.
• Working knowledge of materials testing and laboratory testing equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Requires that you possess Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) quality control (QC) / quality assurance (QA)certification in Mixture Aggregate Technician or Aggregate Technician, and HMA Level I Technician prior to appointment.
  • Requires that you possess or successfully obtain PCC Level I within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Requires seasonal overtime.
  • Requires successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
