Job summary

McLaren Health Care is seeking a Lab Technical Assistant/Phlebotomist for flexible shifts in the Laboratory department. The role focuses on blood and other specimen collection, processing, and data entry in hospital information systems, under supervision.

The position requires a high school diploma and may prefer phlebotomy certification with prior clinical lab experience. Training and safety protocols in infection control are emphasized.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs proper specimen collection including patient preparation, labeling, handling, and storage of specimens.
• Collects and verifies patient registration data and test orders in hospital/LIS systems.
• Processes specimens according to established guidelines.

Job Title: Lab Technical Assistant - Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

Position Summary:

Performs all specimen collection by phlebotomy from the correct individual at in-house or off-site locations. In addition, obtains other specimens when indicated, and instructs patients in the collection of specimens as necessary. May be required to enter pathology specimens into various computerized information systems along with the preparation and staining of cytology specimens. Performs tasks in all laboratory areas under the direction of the appropriate Supervisor, Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Cytotechnologists or other designated laboratory personnel and has appropriate knowledge and training of those areas to be able to function as necessary.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Performs proper specimen collection [blood and non-blood], including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens; complies with all standards for laboratory procedures.
2. Collects, verifies, and processes patient registration data and test order/entry into hospital information system/laboratory information system, including ABN compliance.
3. Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
4. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
5. Performs waived tests and assists in other testing platforms with technical oversight.
6. Assists in quality control and performance improvement activities.
7. Ensures standards are met (quality, timeliness, customer service, etc.).

Required

• High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred

• Certified as a phlebotomy technician.
• Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
• Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
