Job summary

WellSpan Health in York, PA is seeking a PRN laboratory support technician to assist in specimen processing, clerical tasks, and send-out testing. The role may involve on-site or off-site service areas and occasional on-call duties, including preparation of cytology slides and pathology specimens.

You will operate laboratory instruments, perform quality control, train staff, manage specimen flow, and enter data into lab systems while providing clear instructions to patients and customers.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Less than 1 year of relevant experience required.
• Medical terminology. Upon Hire Preferred.
• Good communications and computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of laboratory instruments under supervision.
• Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.
• Trains other employees in day-to-day procedures.
• Receives, processes, delivers, stores, and disposes of specimens.
• Receives and transports supplies, equipment, reports and specimens.
• Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
• Provides instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.
• Reviews physician orders for supporting documentation.
• Resolves billing problems and updates insurance.

May prepare cytology slides and pathology specimens

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision; records results. May operate a variety of laboratory instruments.
• Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.
• Trains other employees in day-to-day procedures.
• May receive specimens into the laboratory, process specimens, deliver specimens to on- and off-site locations, store specimens for future analysis and dispose of specimens.
• May receive and transport supplies, equipment, reports and specimens between the laboratory and other health care locations. May prepare/distill chemical solutions.
• Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
• Provides complete and accurate instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.
• May review physician orders for supporting documentation.
• Resolves billing problems and/or receives insurance updates.
