Job Description

Central Ohio Primary Care is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor for our Central Lab in Westerville, OH. The Second Shift Lab Supervisor serves patients and physicians by ensuring high-quality, timely, and accurate results. The supervisor organizes and directs daily laboratory activities, ensures adequate resources, and supervises technical staff. Responsibilities include coordinating technical, logistical, and administrative functions to ensure prompt and accurate testing/reporting within established timeframes. This position ensures the laboratory is properly staffed with well-trained technicians and technologists following approved protocols. Typical hours are Monday-Friday starting at 1pm or 2pm.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Lead Technologists, Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Senior MLT and MT, Technical Lab Assistants, Senior Technical Lab Assistants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the technical and scientific operations of the laboratory, maintaining competency across all areas.
  • Recommend appropriate test methodologies for clinical use.
  • Verify test procedures, including assessing precision and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with team members, lead techs, supervisors, and managers to ensure smooth shift transitions and support quality assurance.
  • Participate in CMS-approved proficiency testing programs.
  • Support QA and QC programs to identify failures and maintain analytic performance standards.
  • Monitor test analysis and specimen examinations to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Delegate or resolve technical issues, ensuring tests perform to specifications and patient results are accurate.
  • Supervise daily laboratory operations.
  • Assign workflows, conduct performance appraisals, and create monthly staff schedules.
  • Participate in hiring, staff training, and performance management.
  • Mentor staff to develop future laboratory leaders.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance and handle capital purchase requests.
  • Respond to complaint investigations related to technical staff.
  • Address staff non-compliance according to disciplinary protocols.
  • Handle customer service issues and assist with computer troubleshooting.
  • Ensure turnaround times are met, including after-hours and weekend availability.
  • Conduct staff in-services and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of laboratory experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years management experience.

Education, Licensures & Certifications:

  • AS or AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology, BS in Medical Technology.
  • MLT or MLS certification by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to laboratory medicine.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, testing, quality control, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Effective communication skills with medical staff and patients.
  • Proficiency in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
  • Ability to react calmly in emergencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow protocols, work independently, and communicate clearly.
