Base pay range

$48.00/hr - $59.00/hr

LAUSD is seeking a qualified Laboratory Supervisor to lead asbestos testing operations within the Facilities Environmental Technical Unit (FETU). This position is responsible for overseeing laboratory procedures, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and supervising the work of technical staff conducting asbestos analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, supervise, and schedule laboratory staff in asbestos testing
• Oversee preparation and analysis of samples using TEM, PCM, PLM, and Point Count Method
• Maintain compliance with NVLAP accreditation, federal, state, and local environmental regulations
• Perform QA/QC duties and prepare reports for LAUSD offices and enforcement agencies

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

• Graduation from a recognized college or university with a major preferably in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, engineering, or a natural or physical science
• Completion of recognized training in Asbestos Identification by Polarized Light Microscopy or equivalent
• Additional qualifying experience beyond that required may substitute for up to two years of education on a year-for-year basis

Experience:

• Three years of professional experience working in a laboratory analyzing environmental samples
• One year of this experience must include providing work direction
• Supervisory experience is preferable

Special:

• Certification in Asbestos Analysis by TEM or Advanced Asbestos Analysis by TEM preferred

Special Notes:

• Requires wearing a negative pressure respirator
• Employment is subject to medical clearance under California Code of Regulations for exposure to hazardous materials
• Employees in this class are subject to call at any hour
• Completion of a NIOSH Course 582 for sampling and evaluating airborne asbestos is required before the end of the probationary period

Candidates with international degrees must provide a detailed transcript evaluation from a Commission-approved agency.
