Job description

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia is seeking a part-time laboratory specialist to support the research of Dr. Patricio Ray. The laboratory specialist will assist Dr. Ray in research studies aimed at improving the lives of children with renal diseases. This position supports laboratory and core facilities in the MR-4 research building and clinical research facilities in the Battle Building.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  1. Assist faculty researchers and act independently in designing research projects, developing methods and procedures, preparing research proposals, and writing research findings. Oversee day-to-day operations of projects.
  2. Supervise research activities and support personnel.
  3. Assist in formulating and implementing short- and long-range goals for the lab's operation. Project future needs and develop strategies accordingly.
  4. Develop and implement lab policies and procedures. Manage operational policies and coordinate with research staff on issues affecting lab functions.
  5. Act as liaison to other departments, divisions, or organizations.
  6. Design and conduct research projects or experiments, coordinate data collection, verify data, review progress, and evaluate results.
  7. Develop protocols and criteria, determine interview procedures, and approve protocols.
  8. Analyze data, interpret results, and apply research methodology accordingly.
  9. Co-author publications and co-present results at meetings or conferences.
  10. Provide guidance on hiring and training technical personnel. Supervise, train, and instruct residents, interns, students, or staff in lab techniques and procedures.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
