Job Summary

Coordinates and conducts operational and pre-operational inspections of University laboratories and ensures their adherence to all pertinent laws and regulations and/or corrects the evaluated deficiency. Trains laboratory safety staff and aids in clinical and laboratory staff training. Maintains advanced safety systems and equipment and updates laboratory safety resources.

Essential Functions
  1. Coordinates and conducts pre-operational and operational inspections on University laboratories and confirms their compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  2. Records and reports relevant information about inspection findings.
  3. Notes deficiencies in complex laboratory processes and corrects them accordingly.
  4. Maintains advanced laboratory safety systems and equipment.
  5. Obtains necessary materials to ensure laboratory safety.
  6. Trains laboratory safety staff and aids with clinical and laboratory staff training.
  7. Provides input into improvement and updates on trainings to leadership positions.
  8. Aids staff in their adherence to laboratory safety laws and resolves issues as they arise.
  9. Drafts reports based on employee feedback regarding safety practices.
  10. Expands, updates, and distributes laboratory safety resources.
Physical Effort

The individual must be physically capable of performing "emergency response" requirements as defined by OSHA regulations for hazardous materials operations. Capabilities include wearing respiratory protection, protective clothing, and other personal protective equipment as necessary to complete job duties. Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Education Level Required: Bachelor's Degree

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification: B.S. degree in a biological or a related science with a strong background in microbiology, toxicology, and/or chemistry is required. Previous experience in the field of biological or chemical hazard communication, or knowledge of current biosafety, chemical safety or general laboratory safety is strongly desired. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication and computer use is needed.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Work Arrangement

On-Campus: Teams that work on campus, in an office, or in a lab.
