Job summary

Brown University is seeking a Laboratory Safety Specialist to support faculty, students, and staff in maintaining a safe laboratory environment. You will conduct inspections, deliver safety training, assess ventilation equipment, and prepare risk assessments for laboratory work, contributing to a compliant research space.

As a member of the Emergency Response Team, you will participate in on-call rotations during evenings, weekends, and holidays, with background checks and pre-employment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology or Associate in Biology with relevant lab safety experience.
  • Experience in a research laboratory, safety department, or environmental compliance.
  • Ability to obtain IATA and DOT hazardous materials shipping certifications.

Job Description
Position Purpose

The Laboratory Safety Specialist for the Department ofEnvironmental Health & Safety provides support to faculty,students, and staff to help facilitate, assess, and promote a safeand healthy working environment in research laboratories andresearch support spaces. The major responsibilities for thisposition will be to support the laboratory safety program byproviding training, conducting inspections, assessing ventilationequipment, and providing risk assessments of lab related work. Thisposition will help with other safety and compliance relatedprojects as needed.

In addition, this position is part of the Emergency Response Teamrequired to respond to emergencies as a rotating member of theemergency on-call team before, during, and after business hoursincluding weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

Job Qualifications
  • B.S. in Biology or related science or A.S. in Biology
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a researchlaboratory, safety department, or doing environmental compliance orthe equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to obtain IATA and DOT hazardous materialsshipping certifications.
Job Competencies
  • Capable of obtaining medical clearances for using respiratoryprotection necessary for HAZMAT response.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds to shoulder height.
