Job summary

Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking an in-the-field Safety Specialist to inspect labs, studios, and shops for safety and regulatory compliance, with data entry and reporting duties. You will document inspections and review findings with EHS program managers and campus partners, maintain inventory, and support safety training and communication of safety initiatives.

High School diploma or GED with related experience is required; effective collaboration with academic colleges and campus

Qualifications

• 3 years of related experience; equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
• Knowledge of research and laboratory operations and principles.
• Knowledge of standards, regulations, and protocols for handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials, chemicals, and waste.

Responsibilities

• Acts as a liaison to communicate safety practices, regulatory information, and corrective actions
• Ensures all spaces and staff, faculty, and students comply with University and applicable regulations and take required safety training
• Ensures safety procedures are being adhered to in all research and teaching labs by creating, implementing, assessing and communicating safety initiatives that furthers safety culture
• Completes laboratory and equipment safety inspections, responds to inspection findings, and assists in implementing corrective actions
• Prepares, maintains, and enforces the proper handling, storage, and disposal of materials and waste
• Maintains accurate inventory and safety data such as training records, inspection reports, required corrective actions, and safety data sheets
• Assists with new experiment set up including preparation of solutions, testing new methods, and assisting with questions

Position Highlights

This position will be inspecting labs, studios, and shops for safety and compliance with a number of regulations. It is a in-the-field position, with the ability to document and review with EHS program managers and university partners; data entry and trending is a key task. The position will assist in the monitoring, entering, and tracking of chemical inventories and waste determinations. It will require developing positive working relationships with campus partners in the academic colleges.

Environmental Health & Safety

The Environmental Health and Safety Department is part of RIT's Office of Organizational Resilience. We provide expert advice in the areas of health and safety, environmental compliance, stewardship, and fire safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Acts as a liaison to communicate safety practices, regulatory information, and corrective actions

• Skill in time management, organization, and multi-tasking in high volume environments
• Skill in maintaining detailed records of research activities, ensuring documentation is thorough and easily accessible
• Ability to set up, calibrate, trouble shoot, or instruct the use of laboratory equipment and instruments
• Ability to instruct students, researchers, and laboratory users on laboratory procedures and the proper use of equipment, machinery, and related technology

Job Level Overview
