Job summary

Bridgetown Veterinary Emergency and Referral (BVER) in Portland, OR, seeks a dedicated Veterinary Laboratory and Pharmacy Technician to support doctors and staff in a fast-paced emergency/specialty setting.

You will maintain in-house laboratory equipment, run tests, dispense medications, and manage inventory across lab and pharmacy. The role emphasizes teamwork, accuracy, and collaboration with ICU and specialty services. Weekend availability is required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of experience as a veterinary technician or assistant, preferably in an emergency or specialty hospital.
  • Strong understanding of veterinary laboratory procedures and pharmacy operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multiple departments.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays.
  • Experience with hospital SOPs and regulatory compliance is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine in-house laboratory maintenance, quality control, and documentation for analyzers.
  • Prepare and dispense medications accurately per veterinary prescriptions and manage inventory.
  • Coordinate with clinicians, ICU, and specialty services to prioritize workflows and patient care.
  • Maintain accurate lab logs, documentation, and sample handling in the medical record.

Position: Veterinary Laboratory and PharmacyTechnician

Our hospital offers Emergency and Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, and Urgent Care services.

Bridgetown Veterinary Emergency and Referral is seeking a detail-oriented, motivated Laboratory and Pharmacy Technician to join our dedicated team. This position plays a vital role in supporting doctors and clinical staff by ensuring efficient laboratory operations, accurate pharmacy management, and timely diagnostic testing. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, and enjoys working collaboratively to provide outstanding patient care.

Schedule:
  • Full-time
  • 3, 12 hour shifts or 4, 10 hour shifts
  • Includes weekends
Responsibilities:
Laboratory
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and quality control of all in-house laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain quality control schedules and documentation for all laboratory analyzers.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing, including bloodwork, platelet estimates, urinalysis, fecal analysis, cytology preparation, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Identify critical laboratory results and promptly communicate them to the attending veterinarian.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment failures, error messages, and unusual test results.
  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing reference laboratory testing, ensuring samples are properly prepared, packaged, documented, and shipped according to laboratory requirements.
  • Maintainthe digital laboratory send-out log and ensure all required documentation is completed accurately.
  • Verify that pending laboratory callback communications have been entered into the patient's medical record.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and appropriate stocklevels of laboratory supplies.
Pharmacy
  • Prepare and dispense medications accurately according to veterinary prescriptions, ensuring correct dosage, labeling, and packaging.
  • Maintain adequate pharmaceutical inventory,monitorexpirationdates, rotate stock appropriately, and minimize waste.
  • Adhere to all regulations and hospital policiesregardingthe handling, storage, and dispensing of veterinary medications, including controlled substances.
  • Maintainaccuratemedication dispensing records and inventory transactions usingCubex.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthlyCubexinventory counts.
  • Monitor inventory levels for pharmaceuticals, laboratory reagents, replacement parts, and other department supplies, and reorder as needed.
  • Communicate with clientsregardingprescription medications as directed by the medical team.
Hospital Support
  • Collaborate with Emergency, ICU, and Specialty services to prioritize laboratory workflow and supporttimelypatient care.
  • Assist withpatient discharges during peak workflow periods to improve hospital efficiency.
  • Ensure laboratory charges are enteredaccuratelyand diagnostic results are appropriately documented in the medical record.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality assurance standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assistwith training team members on laboratory workflows, sample handling, and department procedures asappropriate.
  • Contribute to ongoing process improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory and pharmacy efficiency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities are required to do this job including close vision. This position requires walking and/or standing for long periods of time, bending, reaching, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to lift up to30 lbs. unassisted, 75 lbs. with assistance. Must be able to work flexible hours includingsome holidays, evenings and weekends.
