Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
Dr. Ashley Webb’s lab is seeking a flexible and highly motivated Lab Manager. The Webb lab studies the molecular basis of aging and age-related diseases, with a focus on stem cells in the nervous system. Responsibilities include technical, organizational, and research support for lab members. The ideal candidate is a scientist who wants to work at the bench doing experiments and expand their skills in the managerial side of research. Primary responsibilities are to assist with conducting experiments to analyze the function of genes involved in aging and neurodegeneration using molecular and cellular biology approaches. Specific duties are to genotype mouse models of aging and age-dependent diseases. This position will also be responsible for the preparation of experiments by monitoring supply inventory, adherence to laboratory protocols and managing databases.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in managing mouse colony including working with animals, genotyping (PCR and gel electrophoresis), and collecting tissues for storage and culture using sterile technique.
  • Organize and oversee the daily operation of the research lab maintaining a clean, safe environment.
  • Purchase laboratory supplies and ensure solutions and reagents are available.
  • Provide advice, obtain quotes, and develop maintenance, calibration, and training protocols for specialized laboratory major and small equipment/instruments.
  • Assist with basic experiments in tissue culture and in vivo (mouse), and molecular biology experiments (cell culturing, quantitative PCR, western blotting, mouse perfusion, tissue sectioning and staining, and performing immunocytochemistry).
  • Help to prepare protocols for the lab, manage databases to track lab reagents (e.g. antibodies), collaborate with the PI and team to keep the lab running smoothly.
  • Proofread/format/submit grant applications, publications, and correspondence on time. Help prepare slides/graphics/software files for presentations.
  • Liaise between the lab and internal departments.
  • Develop and implement appropriate administrative policies and procedures for the laboratory (Animal protocols, biohazard protocols, etc.).
  • Schedule, plan and coordinate lab meetings and social activities.
  • Coordinate with HR and IT on processing new hires. Orient, train, and prepare new staff in the operation of computers, software and research equipment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • BS, BA, or MS in Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or related field
  • Undergraduate/graduate research experience working in a lab setting
  • Relevant coursework and basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry
  • Strong computer skills preferably with some experience using laboratory data programs
  • Experience with PCR and working with animals is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; communicates clearly and professionally with co-workers
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports
