Laboratory Manager

A prominent research laboratory within a well-respected academic medical center in Washington, D.C., is seeking a highly organized and experienced Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager to lead a dynamic team. Our research focuses on critical areas of human health, and this role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful scientific discoveries.

We are seeking a motivated individual with a strong scientific background and proven leadership capabilities to oversee the daily operations of a research laboratory comprising 12-15 individuals. The successful candidate will combine independent research activities with comprehensive management responsibilities, ensuring the smooth and efficient execution of complex research projects.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct independent scientific research utilizing relevant biological and molecular techniques.
• Provide strong leadership and direct management to a team of 12-15 laboratory professionals, including hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluation, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
• Monitor and evaluate staff performance in productivity, technical skills, adherence to protocols, and safety regulations.
• Train and mentor laboratory personnel in advanced techniques, equipment operation, study protocols, and safety procedures.
• Oversee all aspects of laboratory operations, including the strategic procurement and maintenance of laboratory supplies and sophisticated equipment.
• Implement and maintain meticulous systems for sample inventory and data management.
• Manage the laboratory budget and resources effectively, ensuring cost-conscious operations.
• Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols and relevant regulatory guidelines.
• Collaborate effectively with principal investigators and other research personnel to coordinate projects and achieve research goals.
• Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and presentations.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Managerial Qualifications:

• At least 2 years of direct management experience overseeing a team of 6 or more individuals.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

• PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Virology, Molecular Biology, Immunology).
• Strong technical background in relevant laboratory techniques (e.g., virology assays, molecular biology).
• Demonstrated success in managing and leading a research laboratory team, fostering collaboration and high performance.
• Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Proven ability to manage budgets and laboratory resources effectively.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
