Laboratory Manager - Civil & Mechanical Engineering

Essential Functions
  • Supervise the day‑to‑day laboratory activities and handle administrative tasks to ensure the lab runs efficiently.
  • Train and supervise students on equipment use, lab procedures and technical/engineering skills.
  • Manage and maintain lab equipment, including scheduling repairs, performing preventative maintenance, ordering equipment, and managing inventory of supplies.
  • Assist the Chair in managing day‑to‑day tasks associated with the proper operation of department laboratories.
  • Provide technical support for research and senior design projects and student participation in regional and national competitions.
  • Participate in recruitment and outreach activities at regional schools and colleges.
  • Support recruitment and outreach events throughout the year, especially over the summer, including science fairs, K‑12 events, and other events as needed.
  • Develop and update lab instructional manuals and safety modules to ensure alignment with ABET accreditation standards, program learning outcomes, and evolving industry practices.
  • Perform routine and preventive instrument calibration, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and coordinate with UTPB Safety and compliance officers.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of relevant industry experience.
  • Laboratory management experience at the university level.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation, and safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance tasks.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to manage laboratories in both areas of Civil and Mechanical engineering.
  • A master’s degree in engineering or engineering technology, or related field.
  • Teaching experience in education or industry.
  • Proven history of collaboration with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oil and gas industry experience.
  • Experience developing and delivering professional training.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Experience with various engineering software packages.
