Job description

Job Purpose

The Lab Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the laboratory operations including but not limited to laboratory personnel, laboratory testing, company quality standards, and laboratory safety. The manager oversees laboratory personnel operations and safety at a designated location and supervises staff to determine the chemical or physical characteristics of samples.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to clients in explaining laboratory analysis.
  • Assume responsibility for authenticity of Laboratory Certificates of Analysis.
  • Receive orders from clients on submitted samples; follow up on job progress and report status to clients.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of sampling techniques.
  • Perform testing and analysis, as well as other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Manage quality control of laboratory solutions and standards.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment necessary to service customer requirements at the location.
  • Responsible for the management and supervision of employees, overseeing overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these individuals.
  • Ensure that the quality control of laboratory solutions and standards is followed by quality standards.
  • Oversee and manage laboratory personnel time and attendance.
  • Understand laboratory raw data sheets and oversee accuracy of entries into the LIMS database.
  • Ensure that laboratory testing is performed and reported promptly and accurately in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Assist the Director of Laboratory Operations in local marketing efforts when needed.
  • Read and comprehend all analysis and safety standards in English, including ASTM, UOP, IP and other defined analytical standards and procedures.
  • Exercise procedural, safety, and quality requirements specified in the Laboratory Manual & Safety Manual and company policies.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by management.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related science preferred, or equivalent work experience; coupled with a minimum of five (5) years of directly transferable experience working in a laboratory.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing staff.
  • Excellent time management skills, enabling work on multiple projects concurrently while meeting different deadlines.
  • Laboratory experience in the oil, gas, and chemical industry preferred.
  • Ability to work with all chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products.
  • Proficient in ASTM standards.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors accurately by sight.
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Access preferred.
  • Track record of being a responsible individual with a strong work history.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with all levels of management.
  • Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment.
Travel
  • 10%–15% travel.
Working Conditions
  • This position is performed in a laboratory environment.

  • Required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms; accommodate stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or twisting to fit and/or reach.
  • Lifting requirement and/or moving items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea, within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs).
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
