Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX is seeking an hourly laboratory staff member for the Dzakovich Lab at the Children's Nutrition Research Center to assist with plant growth chamber maintenance and data collection.

Duties include maintaining lab and greenhouse spaces, cultivating plants in a growth chamber (hydroponics, nutrient solutions, tissue harvesting), documenting activities, and supporting related tasks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Previous experience working in laboratory settings.
  • Experience with growing and maintaining plants.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment (e.g. pipettes).
  • Familiarity with sensors and wiring.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and organizes laboratory and greenhouse spaces.
  • Assists with cultivating plants in a growth chamber.
  • Cultivate plants in growth chamber, hydroponics, harvest tissues and maintain sensors.
  • Documents and summarizes laboratory activities.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Job Description

Consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with a decreased risk of developing a broad range of chronic diseases. Research projects in the Dzakovich Lab at the Children's Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) are focused on defining how genetic and environmental conditions affect the chemical composition of fruits and vegetables and how these changes alter the efficacy by which they may benefit human health.

Under the supervision of Dr. Michael Dzakovich (USDA-ARS/BCM), the hourly laboratory staff member will assist with the maintenance of a plant growth chamber for intrinsic labeling. They will also assist with harvesting plants and data collection.

Job Duties
  • Maintains and organizes laboratory and greenhouse spaces.
  • Assists with cultivating plants in a growth chamber.
  • - Including, but not limited to, hydroponic plant production, making nutrient solutions, harvesting plant tissues, and maintaining associated instruments and sensors.
  • Documents and summarizes laboratory activities .
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

  • Previous experience working in laboratory settings
  • Experience with growing and maintaining plants
  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment (e.g. pipettes)
  • Familiarity with sensors and wiring
