Job summary

HVJ Associates, Inc. is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to join our Geotechnical and Construction Materials Engineering Laboratory.

The role sits between Laboratory Technicians and Management, performing advanced testing, technical review, and coordinating laboratory activities across multiple disciplines. The Laboratory Engineer will verify calculations, support quality initiatives, and help maintain accreditation while developing expertise in geotechnical and CME laboratory procedures.

Qualifications

• Intermediate-level technical professional with responsibilities across laboratory testing, technical review, and coordination.
• Mentoring of technicians and development of staff in laboratory procedures.
• Experience supporting accreditation activities and quality-system initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Perform standard and advanced laboratory testing per ASTM, AASHTO, TxDOT and other standards.
• Support accreditation and proficiency programs, maintain quality records and training documentation.
• Provide technical guidance to technicians and assist with laboratory workflow management.
• Assist in expansion of laboratory capabilities, including rock testing services.
• Coordinate testing priorities and review laboratory reports and data packages.

Laboratory Engineer

(Geotechnical & Construction Materials Engineering Laboratory)

Position Summary

The Laboratory Engineer serves as an intermediate-level technical professional between Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Management. This position combines advanced testing responsibilities, technical review, laboratory coordination, quality-system support, accreditation activities, and technician development across both Geotechnical and Construction Materials Engineering (CME) laboratory operations.

The Laboratory Engineer is expected to perform advanced laboratory testing, verify calculations and test results, support laboratory quality initiatives, assist with technician training, and help maintain accreditation requirements while developing expertise across all laboratory disciplines. This position does not function as a Laboratory Manager but serves as a senior technical resource and future leadership candidate within the laboratory organization.

Primary Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Technical Oversight

• Perform standard and advanced laboratory testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, TxDOT, and applicable industry standards.
• Conduct and interpret testing for:
  • Soils
  • Aggregate Materials
  • Concrete
  • Asphalt
  • Rock Materials
  • Other accredited laboratory services
• Perform calculations, data reduction, and technical review of laboratory test results.
• Verify accuracy and validity of testing data before final submission.
• Assist engineers and project managers with interpretation of laboratory findings.
• Identify testing anomalies and coordinate corrective actions when required.
• Support expansion of laboratory capabilities, including rock testing services.

Quality Systems & Accreditation Support

• Assist the Quality Manager in maintaining laboratory accreditation requirements.
• Support calibration and preventative maintenance programs for laboratory equipment.
• Maintain quality records, training records, and competency documentation.
• Assist with proficiency sample programs, corrective actions, and compliance requirements.
• Participate in internal and external laboratory audits.
• Assist in implementation of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
• Support preparation for accreditation assessments and client audits.

Laboratory Operations & Technical Leadership

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to laboratory technicians.
• Assist with technician training and cross-training initiatives.
• Help coordinate testing priorities and laboratory workflow.
• Support review of laboratory reports, data packages, and test documentation.
• Assist laboratory management in maintaining efficient laboratory operations.
• Promote safe work practices and compliance with company procedures.

Additionally, the employee will be expected to:

• Become proficient in all accredited Geotechnical laboratory procedures.
