Job summary

SRMC Summersville Regional Medical Center is seeking a Laboratory Clerical Assistant to support testing workflow, manage orders, and communicate results. This role involves handling patient and physician orders, answering calls, routing to the correct department, and assisting the phlebotomy team in STAT/now collections.

You will operate HIS/LIS systems, prepare reports, fax results, and maintain supplies while ensuring confidentiality and adherence to safety policies in a high‑stress lab

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Good reading/writing and communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficient keyboarding and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Process and order patient/physician orders per procedure manual.
  • Answer phones in a friendly, caring manner and route calls appropriately.
  • Communicate with satellite labs and drawing stations about orders and requirements.
  • Train and guide new associates of the laboratory.
  • Direct phlebotomy team for STAT/now collections.
  • Operate HIS and LIS systems per manual.
  • Prepare, sort, and deliver patient reports to physician offices; fax reports.
  • Notify outpatient results of critical values with Read Back as required.
  • Receive specimens into Lab Computer System and deliver to appropriate departments.
  • Inventory and order office and computer supplies.
  • Order tests for in and outpatients per orders.
  • Communicate report status with nursing units.
  • Adhere to safety policies and wear protective apparel.

Performs clerical duties associated with and in support of laboratory testing, assists in workflow within the section, responds to inquiries and communicates results of laboratory testing, initiates appropriate charges, and assists in workload tallying of all sections, and performs certain clerical responsibilities in the blood bank. Sorts physician orders and manually transports to data entry. Procurement and processing of blood and body fluids of Laboratory testing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school graduate or equivalent.

  1. Processes and orders patient/physician orders according to procedure manual.
  2. Answers telephone in a friendly voice and caring manner.
  3. Transfers calls to appropriate associate and/or department according to need.
  4. Communicates with satellite labs and drawing stations for interpretation of physician orders, specimen requirements, etc.
  5. Trains and guides new associates of the laboratory.
  6. Directs phlebotomy team for STAT/now collections.
  7. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate to the adolescent, adult, geriatric patient per the established age-specific standard.
  8. Operates pneumatic chutes and answers them in a timely manner.
  9. Operates the telephone so not to prolong callers' waiting period and/or lose the call.
  10. Operates HIS and LIS computer systems according to the procedure manual.
  11. Prepares, sorts, and delivers patient reports to physician office boxes.
  12. Faxes reports to physicians' offices.
  13. Telephones in and outpatient results of critical values, including "Read Back", as needed by the technicians.
  14. Receives specimens into Lab Computer System.
  15. Delivers appropriate specimens to appropriate department.
  16. Replenishes outreach client supplies when needed.
  17. Inventory and order all office supplies.
  18. Inventory and order all computer system supplies.
  19. Orders tests on in and outpatients according to manual orders received.
  20. Communicates status of reports with nursing units and physician offices as appropriate.
  21. Wears task appropriate protective apparel.
  22. Complies with safety policies applicable to work area as outlined in the safety manual.
