Description

Performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the performance and recording of waived and specified moderate complexity tests and tasks under the direction of Medical Technologists.

  • Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.
  • Maintains venipuncture and dermal puncture competencies on all age groups. Successfully completes most collections without assistance. Functions as a resource to phlebotomists for difficult collections.
  • Enters test results accurately into the LIS and presents results to technologists for review in a timely manner. Performs accurate order entry and documentation on lab requisitions according to SOP. Demonstrates the ability to identify specimen/order entry problems and execute problem resolution.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent □ Preferred X Required
Associate's Degree X Preferred □ Required

Certifications:
Phlebotomy Technician (PBT ASCP) or equivalent certification, Certified Medical Assistant, Virginia State License as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP MLS), Medical Lab Technician (ASCP MLT) Required within 18 months of hire.

Minimum Work Experience
Required - 6 months full time equivalent general phlebotomy or waived/moderate Laboratory testing experience
Preferred - 12 months full time hospital-based phlebotomy and waived/moderate lab testing experience
