Job summary

St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant PRN to support phlebotomy, specimen processing, and routine lab tasks.

You will perform venipuncture, collect specimens, prepare slides and reports, and assist microbiology and histology sections while ensuring patient safety and accurate labeling. Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Formal phlebotomy training from an accredited program is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary collection appropriate to age groups.
  • Collect, process, and transport specimens.
  • Identify proper tubes, containers, and transport media; maintain temperature controls.
  • Ensure positive patient/sample identification.
  • Keep collection trays neat and stocked; assist in microbiology and histology areas.
  • Answer phones, relay messages, and transfer results.
  • Distribute reports to HIM, physicians, and clients.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform various functions in the laboratory of a technical or clerical nature. You will be responsible for phlebotomy, specimen processing, specimen plating in microbiology, histology assistance, preparing specimens for referral to other laboratories, and reporting and document filing.

  • You will perform venipuncture and capillary collection appropriate to specific age groups

  • You will collect, process, and transport specimens

  • You will identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type

  • You will ensure positive identification of each patient and respective samples

  • You will keep collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked

  • You will perform specimen processing for various sub departments

  • You will assist in microbiology, including plating cultures, setting up antigen detection assays, quality control, and maintenance checks

  • You will assist in histology, including performing basic procedures, performing routine maintenance, and assisting in tracking specimens

  • You will answer phones, relay messages, and transfer patient test results

  • You will distribute reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and clients

  • You will maintain records of standing orders for outpatients

What qualifications you will need:
  • 1 year of experience performing hospital phlebotomy(if primary responsibility is phlebotomy)

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent

  • Formal phlebotomy training from an accredited program – preferred

This means it provides the highest level of care for pregnant and postpartum patients, especially those with serious or complex medical, surgical, or pregnancy-related conditions, including those at high risk for maternal morbidity or mortality. The center includes a 95+ bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with 30+ private rooms, 10+ rooms for very small babies, and 10+ beds for babies needing neurological care. It also has 35+ labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, including Central Texas’ first low-intervention birthing suites with tubs. There are 95+ postpartum beds, 20+ antepartum beds, and Cesarean section surgical suites. The facility offers 24/7 neonatology coverage, OB/GYN hospitalists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, lactation consultants, and a midwifery program.
