Job description

Job Summary: Join our team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories. You can find your passion for caring and innovation as a team member in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Our mission is to provide exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services.

Job Duties
  1. Assess, access, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing across various sections of Laboratory Medicine.
  2. Handle potentially infectious blood, body fluids, and other patient specimens safely, in compliance with regulatory standards.
  3. Evaluate the suitability and acceptability of patient specimens.
  4. Reject unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
  5. Match order information with specimen details to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  6. Accessions and reports results via appropriate computer applications.
  7. Assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers correctly.
  8. Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
  9. Prepare specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  10. Deliver prepared specimens to the testing area promptly.
  11. Use laboratory internet programs to store specimens, locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing.
  12. Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental duties.
  13. Manage phone inquiries, providing information on specimen collection, transport, and patient results as needed.
  14. Navigate and access multiple computer applications as required.
  15. Assist with packaging, ordering, and referral of specimens to reference laboratories, complying with DOT and carrier regulations.
  16. Troubleshoot missing specimens and other preanalytical errors, including courier log review and specimen archives.
  17. Maintain equipment, participate in preventative maintenance, and report issues to supervisors.
  18. Handle, store, and maintain supplies properly, notifying supervisors when inventory is low.
