Job summary

MedStar Health in Baltimore seeks a Laboratory Technician to collect and process specimens for analysis and to perform routine duties in the assigned section.

Work hours are 1pm to 11:30pm on Fridays and every other Saturday and Sunday, with on-call coverage and holiday rotation. Initial training runs 3pm to 11pm on weekdays for 3 weeks.

The role requires attention to safety, accurate record-keeping, and teamwork with pathologists, technicians, and other staff across the department.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
• Basic computer skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

About the Job

Working hours for this role will be 1pm to 11:30pm every Friday and every other Saturday and Sunday, with on call, coverage list and legal holiday rotation schedule.

Initial mandatory training for this role will be 3pm to 11pm at least 3 week days per week for first 90 days,

General Summary

Collects and processes laboratory specimens for analysis. Performs routine duties specific to the assigned section.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Retrieves specimens as directed and transports them to the laboratory for analysis using appropriate or specified equipment for specimen collection and handling. Logs specimens into the laboratory. Bags and files specimens and discards surgical specimens as necessary.
• Reviews specimen identification, investigates discrepancies, generates appropriate reports, and submits corrections.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work environment in accordance with safety and biohazard requirements. Identifies and reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.
• Maintains required records, reports, statistics, and files as directed.
• Orders laboratory supplies and maintains supply inventories as directed.
• Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment and materials, including the morgue. Conducts instrument and refrigerator maintenance checks and notifies regional Anatomic Pathology consolidated laboratory leadership of out-of-range results.
• Performs preliminary specimen setup procedures. Accessions incoming laboratory specimens; labels specimens, verifies receipt, adds fixatives, and sorts specimens for appropriate laboratory sections. Assists pathologists, pathologists' assistants, and technicians as required.
• Assists with and performs patient registration as needed or assigned. Places orders and performs inquiries in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Records and dates supplies upon receipt and when placed into use. Ensures supplies are appropriately labeled.
• Screens visitors and telephone calls, takes messages, provides laboratory results and/or information as appropriate, and refers calls as necessary.
• Performs send-out testing to reference laboratories and shared testing with other MedStar hospitals. Monitors pending logs and mails reports as needed.
• Participates in meetings and committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
• Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

• One year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
