Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a PRN laboratory technician to support evening and overnight weekend shifts. Training will be required full-time on weekdays for two weeks.

You will collect and process laboratory specimens, perform routine duties in the assigned section, and ensure accurate labeling, filing, and reporting. The role requires high school diploma or GED and 1 year of lab experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; 1 year laboratory experience preferred.
• 1 year clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality and safety standards.
• Retrieves specimens and transports to the lab, labels, files, and disposes of specimens as needed.
• Reviews specimen identity, investigates discrepancies, and generates reports.
• Maintains a clean, safe work environment and reports hazards.
• Maintains records, reports statistics, and files as directed.
• Orders laboratory supplies and maintains inventory.
• Performs quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment and materials.
• Assists in specimen setup and LIS entries; supports pathologists, assistants, and technicians as required.
• Assists with patient registration and lab orders as needed.
• Screens visitors and calls, provides lab results and information as necessary.
• Performs send-out testing to reference labs and shares results with MedStar hospitals.

About the Job

This is a PRN role, working hours may vary based on departmental need, however applicants must have availability to work on evening and overnight weekend shifts. Applicant must be available to train full-time, weekdays for the first two weeks.

General Summary of Position

Collects and processes laboratory specimens for processing. Performs simple routine duties specific to assigned section.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Standard Job Duty: Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
• Retrieves specimens as directed and takes them to the laboratory for analysis using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens. Logs specimens into the laboratory. Bags and files specimens; discards surgical specimens as necessary.
• Reviews specimen identity investigates discrepancies generates appropriate reports and submits corrections.
• Maintains a clean orderly work environment regarding safety and biohazardous conditions. Reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.
• Maintains required records reports statistics and files as directed.
• Orders laboratory supplies and maintains supply inventories as directed.
• Performs and maintains quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment and materials including the morgue. Conducts instrument and refrigerator maintenance checks. Calls attention of regional Anatomic Pathology consolidated lab leadership to out-of-range results.
• Performs preliminary setup procedures for specimens. Accessions incoming laboratory specimens labels verifies receipt adds fixatives and sorts for lab sections. Assists pathologist physicians' assistants and technicians as required.
• Assists in and performs patient registration as needed/ assigned. Places orders and performs inquiries in the LIS.
• Records and dates supplies as they come in and as they are put to use. Labels appropriately.
• Screens visitors and telephone calls takes messages provides lab results and/or information and refers calls as necessary.
• Performs send out testing to reference laboratories and shared testing to other MedStar hospitals. Monitors pending log and mails reports as needed.
• Standard Job Duty: Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
• Standard Job Duty: Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Standard Job Duty: Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED High school diploma and 1-year laboratory experience preferred. required or
• 1 year clinical laboratory experience. preferred

This position has a hiring range of

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
