Job summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a part-time phlebotomist for Woodland Hills to perform venipuncture and skin puncture with attention to pre- and post-analytical steps. Responsibilities include labeling samples, preparing specimens, and maintaining supplies across the laboratory.

The role requires patient interaction and adherence to policies. The position emphasizes flexibility, weekend rotation, and the possibility of working at multiple lab locations within the WH/WV service area.

Qualifications

• 1 year phlebotomy experience in an acute or non-acute care setting or equivalent military experience.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy Technician II or I certificate (California) required or preferred.

Responsibilities

• Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures and applicable laws.
• Selects phlebotomy techniques suitable for patient age and maturation.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick on patients of all ages.
• Labels samples properly and transports to laboratory.
• Performs pre-analytical steps: bar coding, centrifuging, logging, sorting and staining where required.
• Maintains inventory of supplies and reagents.
• Provides courteous, professional interaction with patients and staff.
• Assists with revenue collection, order accessioning and patient preparation instructions.
• Handles difficult patients professionally.
• Follows directions from supervisors and seniors.
• Flexibility to assume additional tasks as needed.

Job description

Job Summary

To perform venipuncture and skin puncture and pre-analytical and post analytical steps of laboratory testing.

Essential Responsibilities

• Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.
• Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient.
• Assesses the quality of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patients age, physical maturation and the test or study to be performed.
• Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages.
• Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required.
• Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens.
• Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents.
• Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and other personnel.
• Performs other duties as required including checking in patients collecting appropriate revenue, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients.
• Handles difficult patients in a professional manner.
• Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance.
• Follows directives form all supervisors, leads and seniors.
• Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

Basic Qualifications

Experience

• One (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or non-acute care setting or equivalent military experience.

Education

• High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

• Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California)

Additional Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to perform the duties/responsibilities of the job at a fully satisfactory performance level.
• NOTE: The SCPMG Regional Reference Lab does not require phlebotomy certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant college courses in the life sciences.

Notes

• Flexibility is a must.
• Primary assignment is for Woodland Hills.
• This is a part-time position, days and hours may vary.
• This is a temporary position for approximately three (3) months.
• Weekend rotation is every Saturday or every other Saturday and Sunday
• Required to work in all locations lab operates for the WH and WV service area.
