Job summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to perform venipuncture and capillary collections, ensuring proper labeling and transport of samples. The role supports pre- and post-analytical steps and requires professionalism in all interactions with patients and staff.

This on-call position may require working at multiple Kaiser locations, with flexible days and hours per the collective bargaining agreement. High school diploma and CA phlebotomy certificates are required or preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform venipuncture & capillary collection in diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick as needed across all ages.
• Label samples accurately and transport to the laboratory.
• Carry out pre-analytical steps including bar coding, centrifuging, and sample handling.
• Maintain courteous, professional interactions with patients and staff.
• Follow supervisor directives and hospital policies; may check in patients and process orders.

Job description

Job Summary:

Performs venipuncture and skin puncture and pre-analytical and post analytical steps of laboratory testing.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient. Assesses the quantity of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patients age, physical maturation and the test or study to be preformed. Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages. Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required. Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and other personnel. Performs other duties as required including checking in patients, collecting appropriate revenue, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients. Handles difficult patients in a professional manner. Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance. Follows directives from all supervisors, leads and seniors.

Additional Requirements:

• NOTE: The SCPMG Regional Reference Lab does not require phlebotomy certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Job related college courses in the life sciences.
