Job Title: Laboratory Assistant I
Job Summary:

Assists providers and manages clinical functions in the Lab department.

Qualifications:

One year of clinical lab experience is preferred but not mandatory. The individual should possess good communication skills, good dexterity, and be able to stand for long periods.

Position Summary:

Performs specimen receiving and processing duties, registers patients, enters orders in the computer system, centrifuges specimens, labels and aliquots samples, delivers to test site, and stores samples, slides, blocks, etc.

Essential Functions:
  • Stocks supplies, prepares and stocks reagents.
  • Assists in maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment, e.g., refrigerators, centrifuges.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests.
  • Reports work activities and pending work to the oncoming staff.
  • Processes requests and specimens for reference laboratories.
  • Performs all departmental functions and has knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems.
  • Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance in accordance with Orlando Health policies and applicable laws.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions:
  • Participates in the laboratory Quality Improvement Program.
  • Documents specimen quality issues.
  • Practices infection control and safety, keeping a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records and departmental matters.
  • Performs filing of reports and requisitions.
  • Assists with charting and report distribution via telephone, fax, or as appropriate.
  • Maximizes productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • May perform phlebotomy as necessary, with approved competency on file.
Education/Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
