The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling, and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, handling and transporting specimens, preparation of slides, and maintaining necessary supplies. This role may include blood collection according to established procedures to support quality patient care.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating teamwork and cooperation.
Education: High School Diploma or highest level of degree required. A Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field is strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions.
License/Certification: ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry eligibility is preferred. Previous hospital phlebotomy experience may substitute for certification. Incumbents working as phlebotomists must maintain 12 CEUs annually. BLS certification required effective 1/1/2021; existing incumbents with HSAED must renew with BLS. New hires must obtain BLS within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Experience: Prior experience is preferred but not required. Knowledge of medical terminology is required; knowledge of laboratory information systems must be acquired within 3 months of training. Proficiency in Clinical Applications is preferred at hire; training will be provided, and skill must be demonstrated within 30-60 days of hire.
Potential exposure to hazards including infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and injury. The role involves increased standing, bending, manual manipulation, and some light lifting.
The department's Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists essential functions. Core competencies are primarily assessed based on patient populations served, excluding newborns.
This position reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.
