Job Summary

Laboratory Assistant – Clinical Laboratory position. Performs phlebotomy and specimen processing duties, maintains a clean and safe work area, completes computerized tasks, and ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. This position is represented by SEIU.

Responsibilities

• Collects blood specimens using age-appropriate techniques and performs post-phlebotomy care.
• Receives, sorts, accesses, and processes specimens for laboratory testing.
• Completes computerized tasks related to patient registration, test order entry, specimen collection, receiving, and processing.
• Performs basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports, storing and retrieving specimens.
• Maintains a clean, stocked, and safe work area and performs quality-related documentation.
• Monitors pending work, escalates priority work, and coordinates specimen recollections.
• Operates basic pre-analytic laboratory equipment and prepares specimens for transport to other facilities or reference laboratories.
• Receives and assesses specimen acceptability, escalating to licensed personnel as needed.
• Communicates with customers to clarify ambiguous, unclear, or duplicate test orders.
• Routes, distributes, and retransmits released or reported results.
• Receives incoming calls for the laboratory and assists or transfers callers appropriately.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Education/GED or equivalent (required).
• Associate’s or Technical Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience (preferred).
• Experience in phlebotomy in an acute care environment (preferred).
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) license (required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor (required).
