Job Overview

The Laboratory Assistant supports the department by procuring blood samples, preserving specimen integrity, and handling transportation, processing, and preparation of samples. Responsibilities also include clerical tasks such as answering inquiries, disseminating reports, and communicating with referral labs.

Essential Duties

1. Obtain blood samples via venipuncture or capillary methods as requested, considering patient age.
2. Screen specimens for acceptability based on established guidelines.
3. Deliver blood products and surgical specimens to appropriate departments.
4. Process and package specimens received, excluding Anatomic Pathology samples.
5. Handle inquiries regarding lab results and specimen status.
6. Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and guests, respecting patient age considerations.
7. Follow hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
8. Perform additional clinical and clerical duties as needed.
9. Participate in professional development and Quality Improvement programs.
10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited Phlebotomy Program.
• At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of healthcare setting experience.

Licenses/Certifications

• Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT (CA DPH).
• Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); must obtain within 30 days if not already certified.

Additional Details

The hourly rate ranges from $23.00 to $39.10. USC considers various factors during the hiring process including experience, education, skills, and market conditions.
