Overview
The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the collection and receipt of specimens, proper entry into the LIS computer, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and the distribution of specimens to the analytical testing areas. Responsible for arranging daily activities based on urgency of requests. This position is also responsible for point of care testing as assigned, and therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. The Laboratory Assistant handles clerical aspects of post-analytical testing and interacts with others using various communication tools. Must handle bio-hazardous and infectious materials following universal precautions and OSHA guidelines. This position is located in NAH Laboratory Departments only, not in NAH Medical Group Primary Care/Family Practice Clinics.
Responsibilities
- Specimen Collection
- Performs specimen collection and patient preparation, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification per NAH policy.
- Properly labels specimens at point of care following the Final Check protocol.
- Collects blood cultures using aseptic technique to prevent contamination.
- Collects blood bank specimens according to blood bank procedures.
- Uses universal precautions during infection control techniques.
- Confirms specimen and patient requirements prior to collection.
- Ensures specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques (e.g., protected from light and temperature control).
- Processing
- Accession specimens into LIS, selecting the appropriate location, date, and time of service.
- Distributes specimens within the lab, announcing STAT if applicable.
- Uses two identifiers correctly to re-label and initial specimens with Cerner-generated labels.
- Maintains an organized processing area and correctly prioritizes upcoming draw times based on priority (RT, STAT, TM, ASAP, AM).
- Manages the specimen pending list throughout the shift and communicates follow-ups with the next shift.
- Aliquots and labels specimens as per departmental procedures.
- Properly plates micro-specimens as appropriate.
- Checks specimen quality and takes appropriate actions for unacceptable specimens.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement to decrease costs, enhance productivity, and improve service.
- Performs other technical support functions as determined by the laboratory.
- Computer
- Enters data into LIS for accurate documentation and billing.
- Uses PowerChart to print patient requisitions and confirm timed studies.
- Identifies when to perform quick registration, full registration, or client billing.
- Demonstrates use of applicable Cerner icons.
- Completes documents legibly and accurately per site protocol, recording communications appropriately.
- Places specimens into recollect or cancels with proper documentation when necessary.
- Pulls daily fax lists and ensures timely completion of faxes.
- Monitors pending lists and discusses updates at shift change.
- Verifies patient demographics, insurance, and diagnostic test information for outpatient/outreach services.
- Logs specimens into the correct location accurately.
- Compliance/Safety
- Reports safety incidents promptly via the Midas/RDE tool; attends safety training; performs work safely; monitors the work environment for safety issues.
- Stays current and complies with relevant regulations, statutes, and company policies.
- Ensures all certifications and licenses are valid and up-to-date.
- Completes mandatory modules and job-specific training timely.
- Monitors patients for reactions and responds to emergencies as required.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) – Required
- Certification & Licenses: Maintains appropriate clinical competencies as assigned.
- Experience: Approved phlebotomy training program preferred; minimum 1 year laboratory experience preferred.
Note: Healthcare environment requires understanding and competence in using computers and basic software programs across all departments.
