Job summary

St. Luke’s Health System is seeking a Lab Assistant 1 to support the pre-analytical processing of specimens and the preparation of specimens for testing, under direct supervision.

Responsibilities include transcription of orders, ensuring proper specimen labeling and storage, and basic processing. The role may involve POCT, patient instruction, and limited patient interaction, with a strong emphasis on safety and accuracy.

  • Comply with PPE requirements and maintain a safe, clean workspace.
  • May register patients or provide courier services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Description & Requirements

The Lab Assistant 1 is responsible for the pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens AND/OR for the procurement and preparation of laboratory specimens for testing. Performs simple tasks and tests under direct supervision.

  • Transcribe laboratory testing orders efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure specimens are properly identified, labeled, collected, and stored.
  • Basic specimen processing. - Distribute or track specimens to the appropriate areas of the laboratory for testing.
  • Basic knowledge of specimen collections from individuals of varying ages, diverse physical and mental disabilities, and health conditions.
  • May perform Point of Care Testing (POCT), (if applicable to site).
  • Explain collection procedures and provide patient instructions to ensure the accurate collection or preparation of specimens, to facilitate patient/caregiver understanding, and to reduce patient anxiety. Handle basic patient complications and elevate patient concerns to leadership.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
  • May register patients or provide courier services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
