Description

A Laboratory Assistant performs venipunctures and skin punctures on patients of all ages for the purpose of withdrawing blood specimens for testing. Also performs clerical, computer data entry, and specimen processing functions in multiple areas of the laboratory. Normally scheduled Monday through Friday, with a rotating weekend schedule during seasonal increase in test volumes. Must be flexible to work a combination of 8- & 12-hour shifts to meet department needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supports and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
• Performs venipunctures and skin punctures using appropriate phlebotomy techniques on patients of all ages.
• Processes tissue, cytology and frozen section samples in an accurate and precise manner.
• Maintains records per department policy.
• Distributes test results to appropriate areas and physicians.
• Perform assigned clerical duties to support other laboratory personnel.
• Provides Nursing Home and Doctor office pickups.
• Maintain confidentiality of all patients, hospital, or physician related information
• Maintain orderly condition of assigned work area.
• Is knowledgeable of general hospital and unit specific policies and procedures.
• Other duties may be assigned and are subject to change with or without prior notice.
• Performs EKGs, Holter Monitors, and Event Monitors.
• Collects chain of custody drug screen collections.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• Must be a high school graduate.
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
• Must have the ability to follow written and verbal directions.
• Ability to pass specific competencies for this position.
• 1 year clerical or hospital experience helpful

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

• CPR certification or willing to obtain within 30 days
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking
• Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
• Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Works in well light, climate-controlled setting
• May be exposed to communicable diseases, hazardous chemicals, harmful physical agents, hypodermic/IV needles, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
• The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
