POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for collection, processing, and distribution of patient specimens needed for laboratory testing under general supervision and adhering to department identification policies. Perform, evaluate, and report patient specimens using point-of-care instrumentation. Demonstrates behavioral skills that contribute to a productive work environment and provides excellent customer service.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Collects patient specimens using comprehensive knowledge and departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Follows appropriate protocol in processing specimens.
  3. Maintains laboratory records accurately and neatly.
  4. Performs various administrative functions and performs and maintains documentation.
  5. Prepares and uses necessary equipment.
  6. Performs waived and moderate testing according to CLIA regulations.
  7. Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.
SCOPE OF IMPACT

Laboratory Assistants are the first line of proficiency in the laboratory field. They present the image of the laboratory to most in-coming patients and patients on the floor.

Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
  • One to three months related experience and/or training preferred
Licensure and Certification:
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of:
    • Medical laboratory concepts including basic laboratory operations, day-to-day interactions, resulting moderate complexity and below testing and ability to multi-task several lab areas at one time.
    • Phlebotomy, waive-testing to include: quality control, day-to-day analytical quality control and testing, performing employee based drug urinalyses and occupational urinalyses, therapeutic phlebotomies and participate in health fairs.
    • Demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of established testing procedures and protocol by remaining abreast of procedure manual and updates and performance in the following areas of laboratory testing: hematology, clinical chemistry, immunoassay, urinalysis, and hemostasis, drawing samples for transfusion services, immunology/serology, microbiology, phlebotomy, and other laboratory disciplines.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Skills in:
    • Phlebotomy, therapeutic phlebotomy, moderate complexity and below testing
    • Medical terminology, laboratory concepts, day-to-day patient and provider interactions
  • Ability to:
    • Draw blood: venipuncture, capillary, heel puncture, and therapeutic phlebotomy
    • Run and perform testing: moderate complexity and below
    • Resulting and validating day-to-day QC and weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, and quarterly preventative maintenance
