Job summary

Morrison Community Hospital is seeking a Lab Assistant to perform basic laboratory procedures and phlebotomy under supervision. You will travel to off-campus sites to provide services and ensure CLIA‑waived tests are performed and reported accurately.

You will collect specimens, assist in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and serology workflows, and support patient testing from newborns to geriatric patients in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • High School graduate or the equivalent.
  • Training at an approved school for phlebotomy, medical assistant, or nursing assistant required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills in a Windows environment.
  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Must possess a personal presence that reflects honesty, integrity and care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform receptionist duties: phones, greeting outpatients, data entry, billing review and phlebotomy duties.
  • Take physician orders for proper billing and coding.
  • Use ICD9 and CPT codes to determine testing necessity.
  • Coordinate with Laboratory Manager and Health Information Management for accurate records.
  • Collect and accession specimens (blood, urine) for timely results.
  • Maintain competency and stay current with procedures and regulations.
  • Support mission and ethics of Morrison Community Hospital.
  • Adhere to Federal/State/local laws and hospital policies.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.

Lab Assistant (Healthcare)
JOB SUMMARY

Performs basic laboratory procedures under the supervision of Registered Medical Technologist and Technicians. Responsible for the collection of specimens such as blood and urine, performing CLIA waived testing and reporting of results. Laboratory Assistant will be required to travel to other sites off campus to provide phlebotomy services. Facilitates analysis of fluids and results as generated by procedures. Responsible for performing moderate complexity procedures in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, serology in a correct and complete manner. Responsible for performing phlebotomies, arterial punctures, collection of specimens and urine drug screens as requested. Works under supervision of Laboratory Director. Age of patients range from newborn to geriatric.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Performing receptionist duties including incoming and outgoing phone calls, greeting outpatients, computer data entry, review of patient billing, checking the Lab mailbox as well as phlebotomy duties which include performing venipunctures arterial punctures, collection of blood, urine, and throat specimens in addition to performing CLIA waived testing and reporting results, performing occupational health urine drug screens and reporting results.
  • 2. Takes physician orders ensuring completeness of information for proper billing to Medicare and third party payers.
  • 3. Uses available tools to determine necessity of testing incorporating ICD9 and CPT codes.
  • 4. Works with Laboratory Manager, Business office and Health Information Management to assure all documentation for accuracy of patient Medical Records and Occupational Health records.
  • 5. Obtains and handles appropriate specimens for testing such as blood samples and urine and accessioning them promptly to allow for accurate test results in a timely manner ensuring proper treatment.
  • 6. Maintains competency of skills necessary to perform current position duties and new techniques.
  • 7. Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of MCH.
  • 8. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations, the MCH Standard of Conduct, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
  • 9. To perform other tasks as assigned.
