Job description

Overview

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing basic assigned laboratory tasks.

Responsibilities

1. Performs specific duties in one or more of the following areas:

• Collects blood by performing venipunctures and/or capillary punctures, and handles other patient specimens.
• Performs physical part of urinalysis.
• Records specimens and maintains related records.
• Prepares media.
• Inoculates bacteriology specimens.
• Prepares parasitology specimens.
• Prepares blood specimens for examination.
• Prepares equipment and glassware for special tests, if applicable.
• May cut pathological specimens and prepare them for physician review, if applicable.
• May stain and coverslip slides, if applicable.
• May perform EKGs, EEGs, and Holter monitor hookups as required.
• May wash glassware and pipettes as required.
• Answers telephone and delivers reports to nurses' stations.
• May assist with autopsies, where applicable.
• May be assigned to a specific area of the Pathology/Clinical Laboratory to provide technical assistance.
• Assists in keeping supplies stocked.
• Completes daily log sheets.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; some science classes desirable; completion and passing of a phlebotomy training program within the last five years.

Options include:

• One year of acceptable laboratory technique experience covering at least fifty percent of the required clinical duties; OR
• Nine semester hours of laboratory-related college science courses from an accredited institution, or successful completion of a 9-month medical assistant program; OR
• Satisfactory completion of a basic laboratory course offered by the Armed Forces with at least six months of general laboratory experience; OR
• Satisfactory completion of an approved CNA or LPN curriculum within the last four years.

A three-month orientation period will be required to assess proficiency in performing assigned duties and responsibilities.
