Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited institution.
• Demonstrated interest in laboratory animal medicine and ACLAM board certification eligibility; coursework/externship is a plus.
• Foundational knowledge of animal behavioral science and welfare assessment; familiarity with data tools for presentation.

Responsibilities

• Complete a mentored project on a clinical behavioral welfare challenge and present findings to the program team.
• Observe behavioral welfare assessments with supervising veterinarians and learn to identify species-typical vs abnormal behaviors.
• Assist in evaluating environmental enrichment strategies and low-stress handling protocols under supervision.
• Participate in clinical rounds to gain exposure to behavioral assessments and welfare-based decisions.
• Contribute to data collection and organization using digital tools for program metrics.
