Qualifications

  • Graduate of a certified Scrub Technician/Surgical Technologist program.
  • Current CST certification NBSTSA.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • 2–3 years operating room experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, aseptic technique, infection prevention, and perioperative practices.
  • Ability to anticipate surgical team needs and adapt effectively during procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to organize work, establish priorities, multitask, and work independently with minimal supervision while seeking guidance when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the surgical team in the scrub role during Labor & Delivery procedures by providing instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Anticipating providers’ and surgical team members’ needs and responding efficiently throughout procedures.
  • Maintaining sterile technique and applying infection prevention principles.
  • Handling, organizing, passing, and maintaining instruments and supplies.
  • Preparing and maintaining the surgical suite, PACU, and labor rooms between procedures.
  • Maintaining adequate supplies in the OR, PACU, and Labor & Delivery areas through inventory management.
  • Processing instruments per infection control policies and procedures.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and preparing unit-specific medical equipment.
  • Providing direct routine patient care under supervision while supporting safety, comfort, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Collaborating with physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other perioperative professionals for coordinated care.
  • Responding appropriately during emergencies as a team member.
  • Identifying and reporting safety concerns and initiating work orders when appropriate.
  • Following organizational policies, infection control standards, and professional expectations.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Participating in continuing education and professional development.

Labor & Delivery Scrub Technician

The Labor & Delivery Scrub Technician functions as an essential member of the perioperative team, supporting safe, efficient, and patient-centered care throughout surgical procedures in the Labor & Delivery suite. This role assists providers and nursing staff during procedures, maintains surgical instruments and equipment, supports operating room and PACU readiness, and contributes to infection prevention, patient safety, and smooth surgical workflow.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting the surgical team in the scrub role during Labor & Delivery surgical procedures by providing appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Anticipating providers’ and surgical team members’ needs and responding efficiently throughout procedures, including adapting appropriately when a case deviates from the expected course.
  • Maintaining strict sterile technique and applying principles of asepsis and infection prevention throughout surgical procedures.
  • Taking responsibility for surgical instruments during operative procedures, including accurately handling, organizing, passing, and maintaining instruments and supplies.
  • Preparing and maintaining the surgical suite, PACU, and labor rooms between procedures and patients to promote safe, efficient, and organized patient care.
  • Maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room, PACU, and Labor & Delivery areas through effective organization and inventory management.
  • Processing surgical instruments used within the specialty area in accordance with established infection prevention policies and procedures.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and preparing unit-specific medical equipment according to infection control guidelines and manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Providing direct routine patient care activities under the supervision of nurses and providers while supporting patient safety, comfort, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other perioperative team members to promote coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Responding appropriately during emergency situations as a member of the surgical team under the direction of supervisory personnel.
  • Identifying and reporting safety concerns, including hazardous environments or equipment issues, and initiating work orders when appropriate.
  • Following organizational policies, procedures, patient rights, infection prevention standards, and professional expectations.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of patient communications and records.
  • Participating in continuing education and professional development to strengthen clinical knowledge, technical skills, and perioperative competency.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned or directed by management.

Qualifications

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • 2–3 years of operating room experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, aseptic technique, infection prevention, and perioperative practices.
  • Ability to anticipate surgical team needs and adapt effectively during complex or unexpected procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
