Special Delivery Unit (SDU) Overview
- Focus on Fetal Anomalies: The SDU’s emphasis on supporting women carrying babies with fetal anomalies provides highly personalized care tailored to complex pregnancies, including early diagnosis, close monitoring, and advanced medical interventions.
- Comprehensive Care Across the Continuum: Care is offered before, during, and after childbirth, ensuring mothers have access to specialists, resources, and emotional support at every stage.
- World’s First Pediatric Hospital-based Birthing Facility: Immediate access to pediatric specialists for newborns requiring intensive care or surgery.
- State-of-the-Art Facilities: Two operating rooms for cesarean sections and fetal surgeries, a 15-bed Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit, and two infant stabilization rooms.
- Skilled, Multidisciplinary Team: Experienced labor and delivery nurses, a 24‑hour obstetrician and certified nurse midwife, obstetrical technologists, backup maternal‑fetal medicine physician, and pediatric specialists.
- Compassionate, Individualized Care: Emotional and psychological support for families in tough circumstances.
Clinical Nurse Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Follow the nursing process to deliver safe, compassionate, and culturally effective care.
- Gather and synthesize assessment data to develop the patient/family plan of care and delegate tasks.
- Recognize clinical changes indicative of deterioration and utilize the CAT team when appropriate.
- Collaborate with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team to coordinate all facets of patient care.
- Implement and revise the patient’s plan of care on admission and throughout hospitalization, focusing on outcomes and partnership with the interdisciplinary team.
- Coordinate care across the continuum and utilize case management resources.
- Follow evidence‑based practice bundles and nursing standards to eliminate preventable harm and promote excellent outcomes.
- Address ethical dilemmas and moral distress by actively seeking resources and resolution.
- Teach patients/families and progress to expert educator status.
- Document care provided on each shift.
- Rapidly adopt and implement changes to clinical practice.
Communication
- Document evaluation of nursing interventions and outcomes using hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
- Follow safe hand‑off practices as defined in patient care standards and procedures.
- Demonstrate safety behaviors for error prevention and communicate potential safety concerns to unit leadership.
- Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and active listening skills to empathically communicate with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Encourage patient/family self‑advocacy.
Collaboration
- Show effective teamwork as a member of the interdisciplinary care team, fostering a culture of respect.
- Address disrespectful collaboration that could impact patient care and resolve incivility situations.
- Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds and meetings, making recommendations that reflect nursing goals and outcomes.
- Incorporate evidence‑based practice into direct clinical care in collaboration with team members.
- Develop and sustain effective partnerships with ancillary staff and delegate tasks effectively.
- Maintain professional, therapeutic relationships with patients and families focused on their best interest.

Education Qualifications
- Technical Diploma Nursing – Required
- Bachelor’s Degree Nursing – Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least one (1) year Labor and Delivery RN experience – Required
- At least two (2) years prior experience in Labor and Delivery Nursing – Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Computer competency – basic use of computer hardware, Microsoft Office, web browsing, and file sharing.
- Basic use of patient‑facing technology such as IV pumps, point‑of‑care devices, and monitors.
- Clinical communication systems navigation and use.
- Information literacy: determine needed information, access, evaluate sources, document outcomes.
- Electronic health record navigation and use of clinical decision support tools.
- Understand policies, procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations.
- Collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) – Required on hire or
- Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (Pennsylvania) – Required on hire or
- Registered Nurse (New Jersey) – Required on hire or
- Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (New Jersey) – Required on hire or
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – required on hire (hands‑on instructor‑led verification).
Salary Range
$48.30 - $58.15 Hourly. Salary ranges are shown for full‑time jobs. Part‑time pay will be adjusted accordingly. Factors such as skills and experience may result in an offer above the stated range.
