Job summary

Palmetto Primary Care Physicians seeks a skilled Lab Trainer/Phlebotomist Float to join our team across multiple lab and draw site locations in the Charleston area. Travel between sites will be required to provide staffing coverage.

You will perform venipuncture, supervise and train new hires, develop training materials, and ensure compliance with OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, and other standards. A valid phlebotomy certification and 2–3 years of experience are required.

  • Current phlebotomy certification (ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture, capillary/finger-stick, and other specimen collection procedures on patients of all ages accurately and safely
  • Properly label, process, and prepare specimens for transport according to established protocols
  • Verify patient identity and test orders prior to collection in accordance with safety and compliance standards
  • Travel to multiple lab or draw site locations as assigned to provide staffing coverage
  • Train new hires and existing staff on phlebotomy technique, order of draw, specimen handling, and safety procedures
  • Conduct competency assessments and skills evaluations for phlebotomy staff
  • Develop and update training materials, checklists, and standard operating procedures
  • Monitor trainees' performance and provide constructive feedback and remediation plans as needed
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulatory requirements at all locations
  • Maintain accurate records of training completion, competency checks, and certifications
  • Identify and report process gaps or inconsistencies between locations and recommend corrective actions
  • Respond to and de-escalate difficult patient encounters (e.g., anxious, pediatric, or geriatric patients)
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy stations and equipment
  • Adhere to infection control and universal precaution standards
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with front-desk or check-in duties during low-volume periods
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of phlebotomy supplies
  • Support special projects related to process improvement or quality initiatives
  • Assist with scheduling coordination across locations
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of phlebotomy techniques, order of draw, and specimen handling requirements
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to blood collection
  • Familiarity with CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA regulations
  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR)
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and training methodologies
Skills
  • Excellent venipuncture skills across diverse patient populations (pediatric, geriatric, difficult draws)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective coaching, mentoring, and public speaking/presentation skills

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program
  • Current phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent) required
  • Minimum 2–3 years of phlebotomy experience; prior training or mentoring experience strongly preferred
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
  • CPR/BLS certification preferred

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (supplies, equipment, specimen coolers)
  • Visual acuity sufficient to identify veins, read labels, and operate lab equipment
  • Ability to bend, reach, and maneuver in tight collection spaces
  • Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and performing draws
  • Ability to travel by car (or other transportation) between multiple sites, sometimes on short notice
  • Work is performed in clinical, laboratory, or outpatient draw site settings
  • Frequent exposure to bloodborne pathogens and biohazard materials; requires adherence to universal precautions and PPE use
  • Travel required between multiple locations, which may include varying facility layouts, teams, and equipment
  • May require flexible scheduling, including early mornings depending on site needs
  • Fast-paced environment with fluctuating patient volumes
  • Some locations may have limited administrative support, requiring independent problem-solving

A non-exempt position responsible for performing blood collection and specimen processing duties across multiple lab locations, while also training, mentoring, and evaluating new and existing phlebotomy staff on proper collection techniques, safety protocols, and company procedures.
