Job Description: Clinical Laboratory Technologist

Harlem Hospital Center has been serving the Harlem community since 1887, providing a wide range of medical services including surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and family support to residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. As the largest hospital in the area, Harlem Hospital is equipped to treat the most seriously ill patients and offers over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry, behavioral health, and community substance abuse programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

This position encompasses the roles of clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists, and histotechnologists, in accordance with Article 165 of the New York State Education Law and Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law. The role involves performing clinical laboratory work of varying complexity, supervising major program initiatives, and managing a laboratory or sub-unit. There are six (6) Assignment Levels within this class; all personnel perform related duties appropriate to their area of assignment and licensure.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Under broad supervision and with significant autonomy, supervises, trains, assigns tasks, and evaluates laboratory personnel performing routine and complex tests. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining quality control and assurance programs
  • Advising staff on methods and techniques
  • Managing supplies, equipment, and preparation of laboratory media and reagents
  • Preparing labels, packaging, and standardizing laboratory materials
  • Overseeing laboratory repairs
  • Developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures
  • Conducting tests and analyses
  • Designing and maintaining records and logs
  • Testifying as an expert witness in court proceedings
  • Preparing reports and correspondence as needed
Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:

For appointment at Level III, candidates must have:

  • One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank, in addition to the qualifications for Level II.
