Job summary

Western International Gas & Cylinders, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled laboratory technician to collect samples from gas cylinders, perform wet chemistry tests, and support sample analysis using advanced instrumentation.

The role involves safe handling of hazardous materials, preparing samples for analysis, and documenting results with precision. You will operate gas manifolds, assist in developing analytical methods, and report to the lab manager or supervisor.

Qualifications

  • BS in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a relevant field involving gas manifolds and hands-on use of specialty gases.
  • Experience with hazardous chemicals and gas handling preferred.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation and lab procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Collect samples from gas cylinders and prepare them for analysis.
  • Perform wet chemistry tests and analytical measurements.
  • Clean laboratory labware and maintain accurate records.
  • Make mechanical connections (VCR, Swagelok, NPT fittings) and leak-check equipment.
  • Operate computer software (MS Office, Outlook) and record lab data.
  • Handle and transport pressurized gas cylinders and hazardous materials.
  • Assist in developing analytical instruments and methods.

Job description

The primary function of this position will be to collectsamples for analysis using gas cabinets and fume hoods. In addition, simple wetchemistry tests will also be required. Additionally, the successfulcandidate may need to assist with sample analysis of other products asnecessary. Operate and maintain sophisticated gas equipment and analyticalinstrumentation - Design, develop, and carry out new analyticalprocesses.

Some of the chemicals involved are hazardous in nature. The positioninvolves collecting samples from gas cylinders and preparing them for analysisand then analyzing the samples using various techniques. Basic computersoftware skills such as Microsoft Office platforms including Outlook email isnecessary. Prior experience in a chemistry lab setting is a plus for thisposition. This position will report to the lab manager or supervisor

Essential Functions
  • Collecting samples from gas cylinders
  • Cleaning laboratory labware
  • Performing some wet chemistry tests
  • Making mechanical connections such as VCR, Swagelok, and NPTfittings
  • Leak checking of equipment to ensure gas tight connections
  • Use of basic computer software (Microsoft e-mail, word processing,and MS Excel)
  • Handling flammable liquids, acidic and caustic solutions andmaterials.
  • Handling and transporting pressurized gas cylinders
  • Previous experience and familiar with PPE used in handlingchemicals
  • Accurate, legible documentation and recording of all required labdata
  • Conducting analytical tests using a variety of instruments
  • Develop and assist in developing analytical instruments andmethods
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards
Education

BS Chemical Engineering or Chemistry Required

Experience

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevantfield involving the construction of gas manifolds and the hands-on use ofspecialty gases preferred.

Pay Rate

Pay Rate: $30.00 to $32.00 per hour DOE.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Direct experience with safely handling,delivering, analyzing, processing and/or abating reactive or corrosive gasesused in synthesis, purification or related areas and can quickly becomeself-sufficient and productive.
  • Ideally prior experience with designing gashandling manifolds to conduct new analytical methodology.
  • Experience inmetals analysis of products using ICP-MS, with knowledge and experience ofdiverse product sampling methods for such analyses.
  • Familiarity with gashandling equipment including mass flow controllers, pressure controllers andregulators, various line valves, pressure transducers, pressure relief systems,restrictive flow orifices, thermocouples and temperature control equipment.
  • Ideally experience with micro-contamination, ultra-high purity systems andenvironments, i.e. use of clean rooms, particle and hydrocarbon exposureprevention.
  • Analytical experience to measure trace impurities in gases usingFTIR spectroscopy, GC, GC/MS, GC-ICP-MS, APIMS, RGA, CRDS and other moistureanalysis methods, Particle measurement, TGA.
  • Proficiency in Microsoftprograms and ideally experience with LabView, Themo Omnic/MKS MG2000/Vista FTIRsoftware, MKS Process eye RGA software, GC data handling software, controlssoftware etc.
