Job summary

Firelands Health is seeking a Laboratory Technical Supervisor to provide technical and scientific oversight of the general laboratory, microbiology, and point-of-care services. You will support transfusion medicine oversight and ensure reliable daily operations across Bellevue Hospital Laboratory and outreach sites.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Laboratory Services, the Laboratory Technical Supervisor is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the general laboratory, microbiology, and point of care services. The position assists the Medical Director with the technical and scientific oversight of transfusion medicine, while helping the Director assure continuous, reliable, day-to-day operation of the department, including phlebotomy, anatomic pathology, and outreach services. These duties will include assistance at the Bellevue Hospital Laboratory and off-site locations.

Collaborates with the Director of Laboratory Services, Medical Director, Medical Staff, Nursing Staff, other hospital staff members, and staff from supported outreach locations on issues related to management of care, specimen collection, and customer service to ensure quality patient care delivery.

What you will do:
  • In conjunction with the Director, coordinates and directs daily operations including decision-making, responses to problems, identifying errors, and taking corrective action.
  • Responsible for assuring appropriate testing methods are maintained in the laboratory.
  • Establish and verify test performance specifications.
  • Assures corrective actions are taken when unexpected errors or reports are made; includes results from reference laboratories.
  • Assures all test systems are functioning properly.
  • Assists the director in quality assurance activities, human resources activities, performance appraisals and staff development and schedules.
  • Working with leads, responsible for maintenance of protocols, procedures, reports, and data. Assures that all laboratory policy and procedure manuals are accurate and complete and reviewed on a biennial basis by the Medical Director or designee. Assures that policies and practices are adequate for the safety of employees, patients, and the facility.
  • Assures the provision of adequate supplies and cleanliness of the lab and collection sites.
  • Reviews laboratory results exception reports on a daily basis.
  • Reviews and releases reference laboratory results.
  • Assures appropriate quality control programs to monitor ongoing test performance.
  • Coordinates continuing education and competency assessments for staff.
  • Assures adequate enrollment and participation in proficiency testing for the laboratory.
  • Performs or coordinates general lab orientation for all new employees.
  • Contributes to long range planning of the departments.
  • Works to enhance existing services and identify new service opportunities.
  • Maintains visibility and accessibility to all staff for all shifts. Uses a variety of methods to keep staff informed and engaged.
  • Involved with Capital budget preparation in conjunction with the Laboratory Director by working with leads in the selection of equipment for purchase.
  • Serves as a back-up for the Laboratory Director in serving as a liaison with other hospital departments regarding trouble-shooting and policy creation.
  • Acts a resource person for laboratory employees, patients, physicians, medical students, and other employees.
  • Assists with variance report documentation, discussions, and corrective action when needed.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current accreditation requirements (CAP, HFAP, OSHA, CMS, AABB) to assist with continual readiness. Works in collaboration with all levels of laboratory leadership and ancillary staff to ensure that all requirements are met.
  • Assures proper oversight of instrument maintenance and troubleshooting records.
  • Works with the Laboratory Director, Medical Director, and leads to resolve technical and operational issues, ensuring remedial actions are taken when appropriate.
  • Assists with selecting appropriate testing procedures for the department.
  • Assist with the provision of educational training for med tech students assigned to the laboratory department.
  • Maintain current certification and remain current in laboratory practice through continuing education.
  • Assist with equipment and test implementation.
What you will need:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution required. At least 4 years of general lab experience in high complexity testing required.
  • Three to five years’ previous hospital supervisory experience preferred.
  • MLS/MLT certification required.
  • Current CPR/BLS preferred.
