Job summary

The Johns Hopkins Hospital is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the General Labs at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, MD). The role emphasizes phlebotomy, specimen collection, and routine lab processing within a full-time day-shift schedule.

Responsibilities include performing laboratory tests (including waived tests), processing samples, data entry, and participating in Quality Assurance initiatives. Weekend rotations are required and phlebotomy and arterial blood collection are essential

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with coursework in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Completion of accredited laboratory or phlebotomy courses is highly desirable.
  • No certification required; department-approved certification may count toward experience.
  • Consideration of various combined experiences with demonstrated skills in LT2 position.

Responsibilities

  • Collect specimens and perform phlebotomy for the role.
  • Perform laboratory tests (waived tests) including occult and gastric blood tests, urine pH and volume.
  • Process samples (accessioning, receiving, aliquoting, labeling) and participate in lab activities review.
  • Operate and maintain automated pre-analytical instrumentation as needed.
  • Accurately record and report results; ensure supplies and workspace are organized.
  • Review lab requisitions for accuracy and collect pertinent information.
  • Data entry of patient and lab information into systems; support billing and pre-analytic setup.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance initiatives and process improvement.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients and staff.

Location: JH at Howard County Hospital - General Labs, Howard County, MD

Full Time/Day Shift - 7:00am- 3:30pm

Weekend Rotations Required

Will Consider Lab Tech I, II or Lab Tech Certified Phlebotomist

Position Summary
  • Primary duty of collecting specimens/ performing phlebotomy for most in this role.
  • Performs laboratory tests/ waived laboratory tests (which may include but not limited to: Occult and Gastric Blood tests, Urine PH and Urine volume determination).
  • Processing samples which may include accessioning, receiving, aliquoting, and labeling samples; as well as participating in review of laboratory activities.
  • May operate and maintain automated pre-analytical instrumentation.
  • Accurately records and reports results.
  • Maintains established levels of supplies and inventory and insures clean and organized workspace/carts.
  • Responsible for initiating or verifying that proper actions are taken to resolve problems.
  • Reviews lab requisitions for accuracy and collects pertinent clinical and insurance information.
  • May be responsible for entry of patient and laboratory information into assigned systems.
  • May perform data entry, processing of specimens, both for in-house and referrals; billing functions, and all pre-analytic set ups (may be required to process lab payments).
  • Participates in Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Provides feedback to leadership regarding laboratory processes and participates in Process Improvement Initiatives.
  • Phlebotomy and Arterial Blood collection are required skills.
  • Maintains high level of competency for all skills and knowledge required.
  • Participates in training new employees and in auditing laboratory workflows and performance. Exceptional customer service; communicating with patients, medical providers, and laboratory & hospital staff in clear, concise, and compassionate manner.
Education
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent including high school level coursework in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Completion of accredited laboratory or phlebotomy courses, highly desired.
  • No certification required. (Required certification from a department approved agency, if that is counted towards experience equivalency below.)
Experience
  • Two years (full-time) on-the-job or outside experience as Laboratory Technician, and successful demonstration of the required skills* (having passed probation at JHH in combination with other experience that totals 2 or more years) or
  • 6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with a verified Phlebotomy Certification (completed accredited phlebotomy/medical assistant course and passed exam for ASCP, IAPT, IAPS, or other Department of Pathology recognized certification) may be considered in lieu of 2+ years' experience. With successful demonstration of the required skills* Certification must be kept active/verified if used in lieu of experience in LT2 position or
  • 6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with related Associates or Bachelor’s degree in science or healthcare. With successful demonstration of the required skills* or
  • Clinical Laboratory Science students enrolled in their final year of a 4 year accredited program may work as Clinical Laboratory Tech II/non-certified Phlebotomist and perform moderate complexity testing under the supervision of an experienced Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Authorization to Work in the United States: Applicants who require sponsorship now or in the future will not be considered for this position.
Salary Range:

Minimum 19.25/hour - Maximum 31.80/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
