Job Responsibilities

Handles laboratory data collection systems and equipment to ensure proper ordering, cancellation, and billing for laboratory tests for inpatients, outpatients, and institutional accounts. Performs specimen collection procedures for both inpatients and outpatients. Conducts non-technical specimen processing, preparation, and distribution from patients.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications - Required
  1. High school diploma or equivalent, PLUS one of the following:
  • a. Clinical training in an approved phlebotomy training program, OR
  • b. At least a two (2) year degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or a health-related field, OR
  • c. Two (2) years' experience in specimen collection, processing, and requisitioning in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting, OR
  • d. Clinical training in a Northside Hospital Lab during clinical rotations required for education, OR
  • e. Valid, verifiable Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding and application of accurate specimen handling and clerical procedures.
  • Sufficient finger dexterity and visual acuity to locate patients' blood vessels.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Color vision acuity is required; all applicants must pass a Color-Acuity screening test.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    1. Knowledge of medical laboratory terminology.
    2. Familiarity with computer systems and design.
    3. Public relations skills and service delivery experience.
