This role involves delivering excellent customer service, answering questions, acting as a resource for laboratory information, and strengthening the relationship between the customer and the hospital. You will collect and transport specimens as required for testing and collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure proper processing and documentation.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Greet patients and customers in person or by phone, providing excellent service. Answer questions and serve as a resource for laboratory information.
- Proficiently collect specimens from outpatients, inpatients, and emergency room patients, ensuring minimal discomfort and timely collection.
- Understand specimen collection requirements and instruct patients for self-collection when needed.
- Assess specimen requirements, troubleshoot issues, and maintain accurate records. Notify providers or patients if recollection is necessary.
- Process and prepare specimens for lab submission, monitor pending lists, and ensure completion.
- Use laboratory and hospital information systems accurately for test orders and specimen management.
- Transport specimens and materials to appropriate destinations, maintaining proper documentation.
- Participate in Laboratory Quality Improvement activities such as requisition checks and review of pending logs.
Education, Training, and Experience
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent required.
- Familiarity with specimen collection and handling, along with clerical functions.
- Formal phlebotomy training preferred, including didactic and clinical experience.
- One year of phlebotomy and/or specimen processing experience preferred.
- Excellent patient service and relationship skills.
- Strong computer skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
- Stand/walk 4-6 hours during an 8-hour shift.
- Sit 2-4 hours during an 8-hour shift.
- Lift 10-20 pounds occasionally.
- Use hands for grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation.
- Bend, squat, kneel, and climb occasionally as needed.
