Job summary

Cincinnati Children’s is seeking a Laboratory Support Services professional for a day shift position (10:00AM - 6:30PM) at Burnet Campus. This full-time role involves specimen collection, accessioning, LIS/HIS documentation, and adherence to CAP guidelines while supporting patient care in a pediatric setting.

Responsibilities include maintaining licensure, participating in process improvements, and providing customer-focused service to patients and families.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain currency in the field, including licensure/certification upkeep through continuing education, conferences, meetings, in-services, networking, literature, and seminars.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and apply learned knowledge to work, department, and organization.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, data collection, and implementation of approved changes.
  • Perform primary laboratory support functions such as specimen collection for testing and proper accessioning using LIS, with accurate documentation in HIS/LIS.
  • Provide compassionate customer service to patients and families, ensuring education and information as needed.
  • Support department operations including registrations, scanning, send-outs, inventory, and transfer log monitoring.

Expected Starting Pay Range $18.66 - $22.89

Starting pay is based on experience, skills, and equity; exceptions may apply for highly qualified candidates. Additional pay (e.g., shift, on‑call, or weekend differentials) and benefits may apply. Annual pay may vary based on FTE status.

Hours: 10:00AM - 6:30PM, Monday - Friday with weekend and holiday rotation

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional Development

Maintain currency in the field, including maintenance of any necessary licensure/certification, through continuing education, conferences, meetings, in‑services, networking, literature, and/or seminars. Attend all mandatory CCHMC training sessions. Implement obtained knowledge/skills into one's own work, the department, and/or the organization. Assume responsibility for one's own professional growth and development. May participate in internal/external professional committees, agencies, councils, and/or activities.

Process Improvement

Participate in improving /assuring organizational and/or departmental performance/quality through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and/or providing input to department discussions. Anticipate and actively identify and recommend areas for process/system improvement. May work with appropriate personnel to implement agreed upon changes. May participate in the evaluation of improvement initiatives/activities.

Technical

Responsible for one primary function of laboratory support including collection of samples for laboratory testing following approved laboratory procedures. Receive and accession specimens using LIS; ensuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity and timeliness. Performs EPIC registration as required. Competencies are required following CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines. Resolves test order related issues (test in question, sample in question) and manages add‑on tests. Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data which will affect decisions regarding patient care. Accurately and completely documents activities in HIS or LIS as appropriate.

Customer Service – Patient

Act as a customer advocate and strive to better meet the needs of, and to support, patients and/or families. Utilize a customer focus to complete assignments and/or interact with customers in a courteous, attentive and conscientious manner. Respond quickly to parent requests and concerns. Provide appropriate education/information to patients and/or families.

Department Support

Produces work that is accurate, neat, complete and timely. Identifies technical and specimen related problems or discrepancies. Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory information systems. Ability to retrieve result, locate, specimen requirements, fax results, troubleshoot a specimen test issue. Performs registrations, scanning, and assists send‑outs in monitoring pending logs. Perform routine operational functions such as supply inventory. Monitors transfer lists from outpatient laboratories to assure specimen receipt. Demonstrates flexibility within the department. To provide specimen collection or processing of laboratory samples for the Clinical Laboratory department of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children and adolescents.
