Job summary

Intermountain Health invites applications for a Lab Support Assistant at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, CO. This experienced laboratory professional will lead training, support caregivers, and drive special projects within the lab while performing diagnostic testing where allowed by regulation.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum prior experience in clinical or pathology lab assistant role.
  • ASCP Lab Assistant Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process waived or moderately complex diagnostic tests in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics.
  • Maintain instrument maintenance, quality control, and troubleshoot results.
  • Provide clerical, administrative, and customer service support to the department.
  • Answer phones and relay information to nursing, physicians, office staff, couriers, and patients.
  • Assist in schedule management, caregiver assignments, and shift coverage.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
  • Train and orient new caregivers.
  • Monitor and maintain supply inventory and place orders.

Job description

The Lab Support Assistant functions as part of a dynamic and engaging laboratory team in a professional setting. This caregiver is an experienced Laboratory Assistant who may act as a Team Lead or Primary Trainer and serves as a resource to other caregivers, clinicians, and patients. The Laboratory Support Assistant may be responsible for heading special projects, to include research, continuous improvement, and product evaluations. This position spends a significant amount of time performing laboratory testing where allowed by regulatory agencies. Caregivers in this role will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and career advancement.

This role is an experienced Lab Assistant, with advanced knowledge of specimen processing, phlebotomy, and laboratory testing in the clinical and/or pathology areas of the lab. Essential Functions
  • Advanced knowledge of Electronic Medical Record and/or Laboratory Information System to place orders, receive specimens, route specimens, track specimens, store specimens, label specimens using the appropriate policy and procedure, and query test results. This may also include researching and resolving problems.
  • Maintains competency and performs waived and/or moderately complex diagnostic testing in areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Molecular Diagnostics. This may also include instrument maintenance, quality control, and result troubleshooting.
  • Provides clerical, administrative, and customer service support to the department. Answers phones and provides information to nursing floor and physicians, office staff, couriers and patients. Dispatch of couriers, as required.
  • Compassionately communicates procedures and instructions with patients, family members, and other caregivers and demonstrates empathy during every interaction. The Lab Support Assistant may be responsible for deescalating stressful situations calmly and respectfully.
  • Monitors and maintains supply inventory. May track usage and place orders.
  • Responsible for training and orientation of new caregivers.
  • Assists in schedule management, daily caregiver assignments, and shift coverage.
  • Leads process improvement initiatives within the laboratory. May assist in improvement efforts outside of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Demonstrated prior experience in clinical or pathology lab assistant role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching Laboratory testing concepts to others.
  • Customer service experience. Laboratory testing experience.
  • ASCP Lab Assistant Certification
Physical Requirements
  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
  • Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
