Job Summary

Full‑time, 8‑hour day shift, Clinical Lab Special Chemistry position at Stanford Health Care, located at 3375 Hillview Ave, Palo Alto, CA.

Overview

Supervises laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized technical procedures. Plans daily laboratory operations, evaluates work, troubleshoots technical and non‑technical problems, and implements policies and procedures. Establishes quality control and quality assurance programs to meet Joint Commission, CAP, state, and federal requirements. Maintains compliance with health and safety policies and manages staffing, training, performance evaluations, payroll, and inventory.

What You Will Do
  • Supervise laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized technical procedures.
  • Plan daily lab operations, evaluate work, assist in troubleshooting, and provide direction on procedural and technical problems.
  • Develop work schedules and daily assignments to maintain adequate staffing, minimize overtime, and meet customer service needs.
  • Under the guidance of the medical director, develop and implement department‑specific processes, procedures, and quality control programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines (CAP, JCAHO, state, federal, SHC).
  • Collaborate with the medical director and manager to develop policies, procedures, and quality measures for uninterrupted laboratory services.
  • Oversee validation and implementation of new laboratory assays and equipment.
  • Monitor and evaluate equipment, systems, and supplies for operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Perform human‑resource responsibilities, including performance appraisals, hiring, onboarding, discipline, and termination, with operations manager support.
  • Oversee staff training and competency assessment, and develop training material and competency documents.
  • Prepare technical reports reflecting department process volume, testing results, analysis, trends, and recommendations.
  • Perform bench testing during staffing shortages to maintain patient care standards.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance is scheduled and coordinate service requests.
  • Collaborate with the manager to determine capital equipment and staffing needs.
  • Oversee storage of documents, materials, transcription, dictation, legal, and research activities.
  • Review workload statistics and KPIs to meet quality targets.
  • Complete QA reports and address SAFE/iCARE events.
  • Lead or participate in quality improvement projects.
  • Manage inventory and reconcile labor and supply variances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Allocate teaching duties for Gross Room and Autopsy trainees and oversee tissue preservation for teaching and library purposes.
  • Meet supervisor requirements for CAP specific checklists for applicable areas.
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a work‑related discipline/field from an accredited college or university.

Academic requirements must comply with CLIA regulations. A baccalaureate degree in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, with successful completion of one year MLS training program, is preferred.

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

  • Knowledge of new technologies in the specific field and maintain current awareness.
  • Problem‑solving skills for technical and non‑technical issues.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CLS or PA (ASCP) – Pathologist Assistant Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Base Pay Scale

Generally starting at $66.52 – $88.14 per hour. The salary for the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
